As we look at the life of Jesus, we find the most fascinating story in all of human history. He was a man born to a virgin, who lived a perfect life, performed miracles and healings, offered himself unto death on a cross to pay for the sin of the world, was buried and resurrected three days later, and then later ascended to heaven. Of the significant events in His life, the most important was undoubtedly the cross. In fact, the cross is the most pivotal and important event in all of human history. Mankind’s sin and inability to live as God intended him to live would have left us hopeless had it not been for the grace of a loving and merciful God who brought us salvation through the death of His own Son.
Everything Jesus did while he walked this Earth was truly amazing. He was the perfect man who achieved what no other man ever could. However, the events recorded between Jesus’ birth and ascension do not contain the full story of His life.
To get a full picture of the life of Jesus, we must look back before the manger, back before the creation of the world, and back before the creation of any “thing.” This is where John begins his gospel, “In the beginning…” (John 1:1). It is here before creation that we find Jesus already in existence with the Father (and the Holy Spirit). Not only did Jesus exist, but He was also loved and glorified by the Father. In a prayer shortly before his arrest and crucifixion, Jesus prayed, “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world” (John 17:24, English Standard Version).
Long before the world was made or before man’s first breath, Jesus was the beloved of the Father. Before God loved any “thing,”, he loved the Son… And this is great news! The Father has always and will always love the Son. The beloved Son became one of us and fulfilled all righteousness on our behalf so that we could become righteous - in Him! Our God is a God of love, and He brings His love to us through the Son. In Jesus, we are now partakers of the love between the Father and the Son. We are now a part of the most holy and pure love that has ever existed, the love of God!
The life of Jesus is the story of the uncreated Creator and beloved Son, the completely self-sufficient Triune God, who graciously and lovingly decided to enter His own creation to redeem a fallen humanity through His obedient death on a cross as the payment for sin so that the life and light in Him would conquer all sin and darkness for all time, ultimately making all things new and so that His life, His light, and His love could emanate unto His new creation for all eternity!
The life of Jesus is a life of eternal love, a love that reaches back before the dawn of time and stretches far beyond the future.
This is the true life and love that He freely offers us.
